Underlayment main purpose is as a thin topping to level, smooth, or fix imperfections in concrete substrates before installation of other floor coverings, such as tile, carpet, or vinyl. The type of underlayment chosen should consider the environmental characteristics of the area of installation, the type of floor, and your personal needs for space.   • When installing over a concrete subfloor, the main concern is moisture considerations. Concrete is a porous material that can allow water to seep up into it and through to your flooring causing adhesives to loosen, tiles to warp, and mold and mildew to develop. On new concrete subfloors, a minimum of 28 days curing is usually necessary before installing an underlayment. Besides, with a concrete subfloor, you need an underlayment that acts as a vapor barrier, to prevent moisture from penetrating through to your laminate installation. For most jobs, you can use the same tools required for overlay installation. You’ll need a gauge rake to spread the material into place and to control the depth. Then you’ll need a steel smoothing blade to level the surface and break the tension, allowing any entrapped air to escape. When installed properly, an underlayment will correct unevenness and minor imperfections in concrete substrates to ensure a smooth base surface for the other floor coverings.

Concrete overlaying services. Overlaying is a matter of laying a concrete topping of only a quarter-inch or so over an existing slab and stamping that new surface. It is durable, less expensive to install compared to a complete rip off of a floor. Aesthetically, you can end up with the same coloring and texture that mimics the look of brick, stone, marble or whatever texture you’re after on a newly poured, thicker slab.

The condition of the slab and the preparation work done on it is key to victory or doom of the overlays. Concrete grinding

A ground concrete surface has a flat appearance with no or very slight reflection and many at times have a low sheen. The ground concrete is the lowest category of steps of a processed concrete surface. Any grit abrasive from approximately a 50-grit resin and below is considered a grinding step. We heavily recommended that you do not skip grit in the processing sequence, and when transitioning from metal bonded abrasives to resin bonded abrasives the first resin bond grit abrasive used must be one grit lower than the last metal grit abrasive used. The grinding process involves; acquisition of the appropriate equipment and protective gear, prepare the concrete surface by cleaning as we repair any cracks present using a specialized concrete crack filler following the instructions on the package to mix and apply the filler. After which we start grinding the concrete with the coarsest disc, choose discs that are progressively higher (less coarse) in grit-size. The exact grit sizes may vary depending on the hardness of your concrete.  We then apply a densifier to help solidify and harden the concrete if necessary; lastly, we vacuum any debris.

Concrete polishing 

The best concrete grinding is vital for concrete polishing. A polished concrete surface has clarity of reflection like a mirror and has a glass-like finish. Any grit abrasive from approximately an 800-grit resin and above, typically to 1,500 or 3,000 grit, is considered a polishing step.  After grinding the next level, our team of experts does buffing and sealing using a burnishing pad until it is notably smooth. Then we apply the first and second coats of sealer depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Stucco and EIFS

Traditional stucco is a cementations exterior plaster coating available in a wide range of colors and textures. Its characteristics are similar to concrete in that stucco is porous, it shrinks and cracks; however, it has high impact resistance. On masonry substrate, we have the application of two coats and three coats to the metal lathe. Whereas EIFS is a cladding technique designed to protect and insulate buildings while reducing energy costs through a particular layering process, starting inside the building and extending to the outer wall. The EIFS process insulates while preventing moisture build-up within the system. It utilizes rigid insulation boards on the exterior of the wall sheathing with a plaster appearance exterior skin. EIFS wall system is available in two types: a barrier wall system or a wall drainage system.

EIFS with drainage is the wall system that is most preferred; typically it consists of the following components:

  • An optional water-resistive barrier (WRB) that covers the substrate
  • A drainage plane between the WRB and the insulation board
  • Insulation board typically made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) which is secured with an adhesive or mechanically to the substrate
  • A water-resistant base coat
  • Glass-fiber reinforcing mesh embedded in the base coat
  • A finish coat that typically uses colorfast and crack-resistant acrylic co-polymer technology

To install stuccos we attach two layers of Grade D, waterproof building paper using galvanized nails or staples in a shingled fashion over the wall sheathing extending 16 inches around all corners. We install trim accessories (to protect the exposed stucco and to provide clean finished lines), casing beads, a galvanized, self-furring, expanded metal lath or 1” woven wire stucco netting over the entire surface also extending 16 inches around all corners.  We then create wall panels keeping them as square as possible as you place wall expansion joints. Mix the base coat stucco to a workable consistency – then, apply the base coat stucco using a square trowel using a firm trowel pressure to force the stucco into the lath. Using a straight edge, we screed the stucco to a uniform depth of 3/8 inch as we scratch 1/8 inch deep horizontal grooves into the base coat with a raking tool. Once the stucco has become thumb-print hard, we cure the scratch coat for 24 to 48 hours. Mix and apply another 3/8 inch layer of base coat stucco directly to the scratch coat. Screed the surface using a straight board or darby to 3/8 inch thickness and fill any surface voids with an additional base coat. The total combined basecoat depth should be 3/4 of an inch thick. We finally apply a Finish Coat Stucco in the preferred application working from the bottom of the wall to the top. Complete the entire wall in one form as you fill all control joints, expansion joints, and gaps
